St. Joseph HOANG LUONG CANH (1763-1838)
t. Joseph Hoang Luong Canh was born during the Trinh Doanh's
Regime in 1763, at Van village, Bac Giang province. He lived in
Tho Ha Village, Yen Viet district.
He was highly respected by the
people. He was noted for his humility, great charity and kindness
to many people. As a herbalist he treated his patients with loving care
and was particularly devoted to caring for the very poor.
He was executed along with Father Tu on the 5th of September in 1838.
It is believed that the people who carried his body back for a
proper burial experienced a miracle when the river they needed to cross
was too high. All of a sudden, however, the river subsided and
they were able to cross safely.
Pope Pius X beatified Mr. Hoang Luong Canh on the 2nd May 1902 and
Pope John Paul II canonised him on 1988 along with 116 other Vietnamese
Martyrs.
